Resistance welding - Advantages and Disadvantages

Resistance welding - Advantages and Disadvantages?

Resistance welding is a type of welding that involves heating metal and applying force in the form of pressure or tension to join two pieces together.

Resistance welding is an industrial process that involves the joining of two or more metals using an electrical current. The purpose of resistance welding is to join materials that have different melting points, hardness, and tensile strength.

Advantages of Resistance welding:

  1. It is a fast process.
  2. The resistance welding process does not require high temperatures and hence it allows for the welding of soft materials such as copper, aluminum, brass, nickel, etc.
  3. It allows for precise positioning of the filler metal without any damage to the base material.
  4. It provides higher ductility compared to other conventional joining methods.
  5. This makes it ideal for forming complex shapes with minimum distortion or breakage.
  6. It does not involve any heat transfer to the workpiece which means that workpieces will not melt during the welding process. This makes resistance welding very useful for manufacturing parts with intricate shapes or components that need to maintain their structural integrity while being welded together.
  7. It also has good resistance to corrosion and thus prevents failure due to weathering effects at long periods of time in comparison with other conventional joining methods.
  8. It is a fast and cost-effective method for joining metals.
  9. It produces no sparks or flames

Disadvantages of Resistance welding:

  1. Produce more slag which can be dangerous for people around the area where the weld was made.
  2. There are special protection helmets available so these risks can be reduced if needed.
  3. Resistance welding cannot cut through thicker metals like stainless.
  4. Resistance welding can also damage the properties of certain materials such as copper when it gets heated up during welding.
  5. Its a high cost compared to other processes because they use a lot of energy and chemicals to do the job.
