Otto Cycle and Diesel Cycle Difference: Both the Otto cycle and Diesel cycle are different types, They are used according to the required weight, speed, efficiency, fuel, etc. The difference between Otto Cycle and Diesel Cycle is Explained as follows.

Otto Cycle:


  • Otto cycle is used in petrol engines.
  • Otto Cycle required a spark plug to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.
  • The compression ratio of the Otto cycle is less than the diesel cycle.
  • High temperature is created in the combustion chamber by using a spark plug.
  • Otto Cycle produces less vibrations.
  • Otto cycle is used for high-speed engines.
  • To supply the fuel into the combustion chamber Carburetor is used.

Diesel Cycle:

  • This is a diesel engine.
  • It ignites the fuel with the help of high compression ratio.
  • Diesel engines are applicable for heavy weight vehicles.
  • The compression ratio is more than the Otto cycle.
  • High Temperature is created in the combustion chamber with the help of high compression ratio.
  • High vibrations are produced.
  • Diesel engines are used in low-speed engines.
  • Diesel engines required fuel injectors to supply the fuel into the combustion chamber.
  • Thermal efficiency is less.
  • Heat addition takes place at constant pressure in the diesel cycle.
  • Diesel engines are heavy weight.
  • Torque produced is more at the lower speed.
